Take the Waste out of your Personal Life

Lean Nation;

At its must fundamental lean is about "seeing and eliminating" waste.  Lean is the short name for the improvement science developed by Toyota known as the Toyota Production System (TPS).  It is viewed in most management circles as the greatest management system of the 21st century.  Those that have been able to embrace and live the thinking on an enterprise wide scale outperform their peers by as much as fourfold in the key areas of growth, morale, quality, delivery, and cost.

But can the science of improvement be used to help you take the waste out of your life?  Can we use lean thinking to improve our personal lives?

Theere is some new thinking on this topic.  A recent publication entitled "Personal Kanban", by Jim Benson and Tonianne DeMaria Barry tackles this issue.  http://www.personalkanban.com/pk/personal-kanban-the-book/  Using the principle of pull,  lean thinking can help you navigate your life and improve your work / life balance.

The basic promise holds fours steps:
  1. understand your value streams where value is created
  2. document what needs to be done
  3. limit the WIP to create focus
  4. pull the work through your value streams

I hope this is the first of many books and articles on using TPS to improve your life.  We have seen what TPS can do for suppliers, staff, corporations, communities, and society as a whole.  Now we can use the thinking to make us better people as well.

Lean Blessings,

Ron
